Understanding the International Legal Framework on Genocide: The Palestinian Predicament

Understanding the International Legal Framework on Genocide: The Palestinian Predicament
ResSoc x IICA | Academic Legal Lecture

The Academic Research Society (ResSoc), in collaboration with the Institute for International Constitutional Advocacy (IICA), invites you to a legal lecture led by Umar Majeed (LLB, Warwick University).

This research-based talk explores how international law — particularly the Genocide ConventionUN resolutions, and doctrines of sovereignty and statehood — applies to the case of Palestine. Topics include:

  • Legal definitions of genocide (actus reusmens readolus specialis) and their application to Gaza;

  • The recognition of Palestinian statehood in international law;

  • How legal concepts like “terrorism” are used to shape narratives and policy;

  • The role and limitations of the UN in cases of mass atrocity;

  • Broader critiques of legal frameworks and global power, including Hostis Humani Generis.

Drawing on human rights reports, legal precedent, and academic scholarship, the event offers a rigorous inquiry into justice, complicity, and international accountability.

Open to all students, especially those studying Law, Politics, IR, Philosophy, and Development. Includes a live Q&A.
