The Russian Revolution: The Greatest Event in History - Marx Soc Open Meeting

Join us at 6:30pm on Thursday 26th March at Brewhouse and Kitchen for a talk on the greatest event in human history, the Russian Revolution!

In 1917, the working class took conscious control of society for the first time. They overthrew the oppressive Tsarist regime with its pogroms and bloody reppression. The liberal bourgois government that replaced it proved itself incapable of providing the necessities; incapable of freeing the workers from their chains.

The toilers realised that it was them that held the power. They produced everything, they did all the work, and they were organised. All while the parasites up top took everything from them and the government forced their brothers into the meatgrinder of the First World War. If they wanted peace, land, and bread, it was up to them.

So the workers rose up. They stormed heaven. They took all the great levers of the economy; all the wealth that they had created. They took it all into their own hands. For the first time in history, a workers' state was established. Through workers' councils, they made the most democratic system the world has ever seen. For the first time, workers began to decide what they wanted the world to look like. They introduced universal suffrage over decade before the UK, they legalised homosexuality, they created new art, they advanced technology.

This revolution would go on to degenerate into the authoritarian rule of Stalin's USSR. But to throw away this experience because of that would be foolish. They overthrew capitalism. Russia went from being a backwards, semi-feudal country to being a world superpower, sending people to space, in about 3 decades.

As communists, we must understand how the workers managed to take power, how the bolsheviks went from a plucky organisation of reading circles to a force that could lead the workers to victory, and lastly we must learn why it degenerated and how we can make sure our revolution truly succeeds.
