We are a student-led team entering the Greenpower Formula 24+ competition, in which teams design, build and then endurance race a small electric car in a number of different races. It’s a competition which will put your engineering skills to the test and let you experience a small-scale electric version of the World Endurance Championship!  We are a group of (mainly) engineers who all live and breathe engineering and motorsport, but we pride ourselves on being inclusive and welcoming to all. Find out about all the ways you can get involved below!

Greenpower team- the main team is made up of 4 subteams:

  • Aerodynamics: uses CAD to develop models of the car to test in the wind tunnel and in CFD
  • Mechanical: works on the drive train, gearing, steering and more, this team uses CAD, structural calculations and FEA, and manufacturing skills to improve and optimise all mechanical aspects of the car
  • Composites: uses CAD surface modeling to design the car's aeroshell, wheel covers, steering wheel and more. Manufactures carbon fibre composite parts bespoke to the car.
  • Electrical: work on electrical systems in the car including power distribution, sensors, wiring, and control electronics.

RC Car competition:

For those who want to join the society with no engineering experience- we've got you covered! the Remote control car competition is a training program where participants will be put in teams and attend skills sessions:

  • CAD basics workshop
  • RC Electrical system breifing
  • Resources at UoB session
  • Manufacturing session

These workshops run september through october and then teams have until January to build and test their car. Participants then race head to head competing for prized including most creative design!

Note: entrace to this program is now closed, check back after Christmas!

FAQ

Q. How do I join?
A. Attent our introductory sessions in September to get the link to join the WhatsApp community. If youve missed these please email: bristol_racing@outlook.com to see if we have opportunities for you! Memberships are £35 and can be purchased using the 'Join this Group' button at the top.

Q. How much engineering/motorsport experience do I need to have?
A. If you have experience the get in contact and we may be able to place you in the main team straight away! If not the RC training program is the perfect way to get the experience you need.

Q. Which Greenpower races will you be competing in?
A. Our aim is to enter multiple race events and compete for entry into the International Final held at Goodwood each year.

Q. Will I get to drive the car?
A. Due to the endurance nature of the race, the performance gain by having lower mass is huge, therefore if you have driven go-karts/other racing vehicles before and are on the smaller and lighter side you are very welcome to put yourself forward! Another thing to note is that a driver's licence is not required to drive the car.

Q. Does the University of Bristol enter the Formula Student competition?
A. No. The University of Bristol Faculty of Engineering do not support the Formula Student competition and, as of our most recent discussion with them on this matter, there are no plans to in the near future. Due to our keenness to provide a motorsport-based engineering society that can provide the opportunity to develop the practical skills for designing and manufacturing a large project spanning across multiple engineering disciplines, we decided to enter the Greenpower Formula 24+ competition. We see Greenpower as the best way of providing our members with the practical experience they need from a society like ours, allowing them to design, build and endurance race an electric car from the word go. This has its benefits over Formula Student as it allows us to skip the tedious Concept Class entry/s and build a car in our first year that we can develop further.
