About Us

The University of Bristol Society of Change Ringers (aka UBSCR) is one of the University's oldest societies! We're a group of bellringers who ring on church tower bells across Bristol. We welcome ringers and non-ringers of all abilities to join us. Our home tower is St Matthew's Kingsdown. We go there every Tuesday night from 19:30-21:00 during term time. We're lucky in that we can ring at several other towers, including The Mount Without, St Paul's Southville, St Philip & Jacob (Pip 'n' Jay), Bristol Cathedral and St Mary Redcliffe..

However, we're not just a ringing society. We spend at least as much time socialising as we do ringing! The society has many socials (Cheese and Port night, Pudding Party, Summer BBQ to name a few). We also have a Christmas Dinner, and a Formal Dinner in January to which all past and present members are invited. We go on at least two weekend tours a year where we travel across the country, ringing and finding pubs as we go! In November we compete against other universities at the famous SUA and NUA events.

If you'd like to know more about what 'change ringing' is in general, see here.

Event Information

We hold practice sessions every Tuesday evening during term time at St Matthew's Church in Kingsdown.
All sessions are free and open to everyone—whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced ringer, you're very welcome to join us!

A typical practice looks like:

  • 6:45pm-7:30pm - Learner's practice,
  • 7:30pm-9:00pm - Main practice
  • 9:00pm-late - The Kingsdown Vaults Pub

Social Events
Throughout the year, we hold a variety of socials. These include seasonal events, like Halloween and our Pancake Day Party. We also hold other socials such as the annual dinner, bar crawls, and activities such as laser tag. Below are some pictures of the BBQ and our mascot, Blåhaj, at the dinner!

Ringing Outings
We frequently head out on tower tours across the country to explore new places and belfries. The main event for this is the Southern Universities Association competition, where each of the different Southern Universities come to compete. Bristol proudly holds the trophies for both the 6 and 8 bell striking competitions. Here are some pictures of our adventures below...

The Wills Memorial Bell
As a society, we are lucky to be given the opportunity to ring Great George, the bell within Wills Memorial Building, each year for the University's Charter Day. This is a highlight of the society's academic year and you may get the chance to experience this unique opportunity too! Here are some pictures of this special occasion below:

Membership Details

The UBSCR offers two different memberships: a full membership and a social membership. We pride ourselves on ensuring our membership fee remains among the most affordable at the University. Our full membership gives you access to ring the bells at our practices on Tuesdays and the rest that the society has to offer.

We also offer a free social membership that gives access to our wide range of socials, although this does not include any access to ring the bells.

We recommend choosing a Full Membership to make the most of everything the society has to offer. If you're unsure, you're very welcome to come along and see bellringing for yourself at one of our Tuesday practices!
