Bristol SU information

Bristol SU recognises that the costs of participating in student groups can be prohibitively expensive for some students. The Activity Hardship Fund was created to support those students who wouldn't otherwise be able to participate in their chosen activity due to the cost.

About us

Muay Thai is one of the most effective and visually striking martial arts in the world, renowned as the pride of Thailand. Historically, it has dominated other kickboxing styles and is now rapidly gaining popularity worldwide due to its beauty, efficiency, and rich cultural heritage. Muay Thai fighters utilize punches, kicks, elbow strikes, knees, upright grappling (clinch), as well as sweeps, trips, dumps, and throws.

UoB Muay Thai Society is the largest martial arts society in the university, catering to all experience levels from complete beginner to experienced fighters. We offer multiple training session a week alongside fun socials and many opportunities to grow as a fighter. Whether you're looking to boost your fitness, improve flexibility, learn self-defence, relieve stress, or simply have fun and meet new friends, UoB Muay Thai has something for everyone!

Membership Details

  • Annual membership: £65
  • Single semester membership: £40

We offer two types of memberships, annual memberships and semester memberships. For a one-off payment of £65, our annual membership grants you unlimited access to all university-based classes throughout the academic year. With around 150 sessions available, this works out to approximately £0.50 per session, making it a highly cost-effective plan. Additionally, as a member, you’ll be eligible to apply for fights and competitions within the club, and you can run for a position in the next AGM.

Our single semester memberships, like our annual membership, grants access to all university-based classes and fight team based activities, but for a single semester. This type of membership is best suited towards those joining the society later in the academic year, students spending a single semester at the University of Bristol, or those who do not want to commit to a full membership quite yet. However, if only a single semester membership is purchased and the buyer wishes to continue training with us into the second semester, a second single semester memberhsip must also be purchased. This is why we recomend buying the annual membership instead!

Fight team

For those aiming to compete, we have a highly active Fight Team.

Over the course of the year, we host several intersociety exhibition fights to showcase Muay Thai and highlight the skills of our members. These events take the place on the usual Saturday 5-7pm training session and are open for all to come and watch. This event features a set number of hard sparring matches, where members are pitted against each other in a more competitive setting.

Once a year we host our coveted Muay Thai Fight Night, held in the Anson room, where members step into the ring with fighters from universities across the country. This event is a highlight of the year, drawing a large crowd of students, friends, and supporters.

Alongside hosting our own Fight night, we frequently send fighters to compete in fight nights and interclubs held by universities nationwide.

FAQ

What do I need to bring to my first session?

Bring a bottle of water and comfortable workout clothing. For those wanting to take part in sparring, you must bring a mouth guard and a groin guard. Women are not required to wear goin guards.

I’m new to martial arts. Can I still take part?

Our sessions accommodate both beginners and experienced marital artists. Our coaches split the class into groups based on experience to ensure the training is tailored to each and everyone's training needs. If you’ve never trained martial arts before, don't worry. Our sessions are the perfect place to start!

Can I try a session before commiting to a membership?

Your first session with us is free. Book a GIAG (give it a go) ticket on our SU website and show it to a committee member upon arrival. After your first session, you will require a membership to continue attending any sessions. Later on in the year, GIAG tickets may become unavalible on our website. Do not worry. You can still attend a free session before deciding whether to buy a membership. Just make sute to let a member of the committee know before starting the session.

Does the society host social events outside training?

Yes! We have a team of social secretaries who work hard to make sure our society is as much fun off the mat as it is on it. Example of past socials we've held include pub crawls, sh*t shirt nights, club nights, potlucks, house parties, ect.

Where can I stay updated about training and socials?

Make sure to follow our instagram and join our whatsapp group to ensure you don't miss anything! Our whatsapp and instagram will be linked below.

Do I need my own boxing gloves and shin pads?
