Bristol SU recognises that the costs of participating in student groups can be prohibitively expensive for some students. The Activity Hardship Fund was created to support those students who wouldn't otherwise be able to participate in their chosen activity due to the cost.

About Us:

Shakespeare Society (SHAXSOC) is Bristol's only society dedicated to performing, reinventing, and making Shakespeare exciting!

Most people when hearing the name 'Shakespeare' are plagued with dull memories from being taught Shakespeare in school....

Fortunately for YOU, at SHAXSOC we're here to bid such memories 'adieu' as we are all about showcasing Shakespeare in the way it was always intended  through memorable performances full of life, laughter, and people who will soon feel like family.

Since the forming of SHAXSOC in 2022, a quick glimpse into the Shakespearean staples we have performed already include King LearA Midsummer Night's Dream, and (of course) Romeo and Juliet, with our repertoire only growing every new academic year!

As well as full-length plays, SHAXSOC kicks off every year with its annual SHAXSOC Showcase: multiple 15-to-20-minute performances of our favourite Shakespearean plays..with a fun twist!

Beyond the stage, our social secretaries keep your best interests at heart by hosting regular socials (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) 一 from the classic pub trip to the high-energy scavenger hunt 一 turning castmates into close friends and letting you meet new, like-minded members along the way!

If you prefer working behind the scenes, we at SHAXSOC understand how valuable the production side of any performance is. Therefore, members are offered a range of opportunities, across our multiple main shows and showcases, to dabble in directing, producing, marketing, costume designing..you name it!

Remember, there is never any pressure to perform 一 if you just want to come along for a chat, there will always be a friendly face to greet you :)

TO ALL OUR FRESH FACES.... At one point in time, everyone on Committee was a fresher. We understand how stressful and intimidating it can be to join and adjust to a new group. This is why all of our shows prioritise freshers, ensuring you will be able to take the world of theatre by storm as early as possible!

However, if you are reading this having never performed or studied Shakespeare before, do not let this discourage youYOU ARE NOT ALONE. As much as we adore Shakespeare in this society, we all agree that his language can be a bit of a confusing mouthful sometimes. If scholars cannot agree on the meaning of his words, don't worry 一 you're not expected to either!

This is why, to combat your Shakesfears, SHAXSOC hosts workshops with theatrically experienced members or alumni that will assist you in building up your talents, letting you confidently appreciate, and not fear, his words. Below are examples of previous workshops:

Of course, apart from workshops, there is never any harm in simply asking! SHAXSOC is dedicated to building a friendly, accessible, and inclusive environment for everyone. Whether you're a Shakespeare superfan or just a beginner, here at SHAXSOC you will be able to stand in the spotlight together with other members and assert the fine question of 'To be, or not to be' with ease.

Take your time 一 SHAXSOC will always welcome you with open arms and remember: hot people do Shakespeare!

We look forward to meeting you and to all you will bring to this society!
