Hello!
We are Student Action for Refugees (STAR); one of over 40 groups around the UK and part of a national charity of thousands of students who are welcoming asylum seekers and refugees to the UK.
Together we:
Across our various projects, STAR provides its members with more volunteering opportunities than most other student societies in the University of Bristol, alongside regular socials and events where members can meet other students who share our values. The ESOL Conversation Club is our bi-weekly volunteering project running every Tuesday and Thursday in Bristol Central Library. At our Conversation Clubs, student volunteers support ESOL learners from the wider community to improve their confidence in spoken English through fun and informal conversation sessions.
Volunteer applications are now closed for the 2025/2026 academic year and will reopen in September 2026 for the 2026/2027 academic year.
If you are an ESOL student interested in joining the club as a learner, you can find out more about our clubs at Central Library as well as many more dotted around the city by visting esolcc.org
We work in partnership with local Bristol/Oxford charity Jacari to support students to volunteer as tutors to primary school children from refugee, migrant, and asylum-seeking backgrounds in Bristol. You can find out more about the Jacari volunteering opportunity by visiting their website.
We also run fundraising events to support the incredible work Jacari do in Bristol and Oxford. Keep an eye on our SU events page and Instagram to see when these are happening.
Our Bristol STAR Campaigns Team is currently working on 2 key campaigns:
- Divest Borders - pushing the University of Bristol to divest from the border and surveillance industry
- Political Participation - working to support and empower local people from refugee, migrant, and asylum-seeking communities to engage in local and national democracy
We have also just started a Refugee Health Campaigns Team to work on issues surrounding refugee access to health care in Bristol. They're currently working closely with the Safe Surgeries project and the Patients Not Passports national campaign.
