Description

Who Are We?

The University of Bristol Criminal Justice Society was established in 2021. Our society aims to help facilitate our member's interests and connections for a career within the criminal justice system. With a holistic approach to criminal justice, we help cater for both law and non-law students.

Whilst helping our members develop connections with the profession, we actively encourage a critical examination and discussion of the justice system from a range of perspectives and disciplines.

Upcoming events:

We host a range of events across the many branches of the criminal justice system. Our events consist of talks and panel events, socials, court visits, debate and mooting, trips out of the city and more!

Our events are a perfect way to enhance your CV, develop connections within the profession and meet like-minded people!

Keep an eye out on our Instagram and visit our website https://cjsbristol.wixsite.com/website.

Some headline events (TB1):

'Give it a go!' debate- come and meet us in Senate house to join in on a chill debate about issues facing criminal justice in England and Wales. Should we have a death penalty? Should juries be abolished? Should cannabis be decriminalised? Come and have a drink and discussion with us- open to members AND non-members!

'When Criminal Justice goes wrong - overturning wrongful convictions'- What happens when there is a miscarrage of justice? Join us and Chris Kessling from the the Inns of Court College of Advocacy for our first speaker event of the year. Interested in becoming a barrister? Chris will also be discussing the Bar Practice Course and what the ICCA has to offer.

Crown Court group trip/social- Ever wanted to see what happens inside of a courtroom? Join us for a trip to the Bristol Crown Court to watch advocacy in action. This group session will be ran by our committee members who are regulars at the court. They will be able to disclose all the rules and ettiquete of the courtroom so you don't have to feel nervous or lost. Afterwards, we will be hosting a social to discuss what we've seen, or anything else!

Criminal law moot- Join the Criminal Justice Society in our first moot of the year. A great opportunity to enhance your CV and advocacy skills. Details to be confirmed.

Supreme Court tour- Our trip for TB1 has been confirmed: we are taking you to London for a tour of the UK Supreme Court and a visit to Parliament! Your CJS membership lets you join us for a subsidised trip to the capital city and a tour of the highest court in the nation. Before that, we will have an opportunity to sit in the Supreme Court's public gallery and do some tourism in Westminster, seeing sights like Big Ben, the London Eye, Westminster Abbey, and Parliament (optional visit to House of Commons public gallery for those interested).

Please keep up to date on our instagram for information about the above and our other TB1 events. TB2 events are to be announced at the end of the year.
