Officer Statement on Professor Jason Arday

Tuesday 18-08-2026 - 12:16

We’re deeply saddened to have heard about the passing of Professor Jason Arday last week. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, colleagues, students, and anyone who has been affected by this loss.

Professor Arday's death comes following a period of intense public scrutiny and debate surrounding his academic career and person life. No individual should be subjected to racism, harassment, abuse or dehumanisation. We particularly acknowledge the impact this may be having on Black and autistic students.

We stand firmly against racism and all forms of prejudice and believe it’s important to commit to meaningful action and accountability in this area. Universities and Students’ Unions have a responsibility to create environments where all can learn, work and participate without fear of discrimination, hostility or intimidation.

This is reflected in the work we already do to support marginalised students and develop inclusive spaces, but we know that there is always more to do.

Professor Arday’s contribution to higher education and to the lives of those he worked with will not be forgotten.

If you’ve been affected by the news or media coverage surrounding it, we encourage you to seek support
