This is your chance to make a difference and learn more about democracy at Bristol SU!
This Student Council will happen on 15 October 2026 between 17:00 and 19:00 in the Anson Rooms of the Richmond Building. Please arrive from 16:30 to help make the sign-in process as smooth as possible!
This is an unticketed event but please bring your student IDs as we will need to check them to verify who is able to vote. There will be samosas provided at the end of the meeting.
Student Council is the main representative forum of the Students' Union. It creates policy which directs the focus for our team of seven SU officers. Members discuss and vote on items (called motions) submitted by students. Any motions that pass become active SU policy for three years.
All students can submit Ideas to become motions and attend the meeting, but only course reps, faculty reps, student community organisers, society presidents, volunteering project co-ordinators, or club captains can vote on motions. Find out more on the democratic events page and on the Ideas Board page.
The window to submit motions and Ideas for this Student Council is now closed. You can submit an amendment on the motion coming to Student Council by emailing us at bristolsu-democracy@bristol.ac.uk
Ahead of Student COuncil students can put forward Ideas and suggestions, designed to improve students' lives. These then get discussed by our Demcoratic Standards Committee and allocated - those that get allocated to Student Council become motions. All Bristol students can then attend Student Council to watch the debates and see which motions have been voted in (passed).
In previous Student Councils, students have passed policy to better support pregnant students, to support the climate strike campaign, and to adopt a harm reduction approach to drugs and alcohol. This is your chance to make long-lasting and far-reaching change at Bristol.
We have 1 motion coming to this Student Council:
Please get in touch with any questions: email our Democracy inbox or our Democracy & Campaigns Coordinator.
You must attend in person to contribute to the debate.
While all students are able and encouraged to attend Student Council, only Course Reps, Faculty Reps, Student Community Organisers, and Society Presidents can vote on motions. If you're a Society President and can't make it to the meeting, you can send it someone from your committee as a Proxy and they can vote in your place! Make sure you don't send someone who already has voting powers through another role (i.e. being a Course Rep), as you only get one vote per person rather than one vote per role.
