Student Council
This is your chance to make a difference and learn more about democracy at Bristol SU!
Student Council happens twice a year at Bristol SU. This is the second of the two, and it will take place from 16:00 - 19:00 on 4 May at The Anson Rooms, Richmond Building!
Student Council is the main representative forum of the Students' Union. It creates policy which directs the focus for our team of 7 SU officers. Members discuss and vote on items (called motions) submitted by students. Any motions that pass become active SU policy for three years.
All students can submit motions and attend the meeting, but only course reps, faculty reps, network chairs, society presidents, volunteering project co-ordinators, or club captains can vote on motions.

Student Council happens twice a year, once in TB1, and once in TB2. Ahead of each Student Council students can put forward suggestions (called motions), which are designed to improve students’ lives. All Bristol students can then attend Student Council to watch the debates and see which motions have been voted in (passed).
In previous Student Councils, students have passed policy to create Black Students' and Parents, Carers, and Mature Students' Networks, to better support pregnant students, to support the climate strike campaign, and to adopt a harm reduction approach to drugs and alcohol. This is your chance to make long-lasting and far-reaching change at Bristol.
This is an unticketed event but please bring your student IDs as we will need to check them to verify who is able to vote. There will also be free pizza provided with vegan and gluten free options!
How Does Student Council Work?
Student Council is a chance for you to get your voice heard directly and help set the agenda of your Students Union. You can help submit your student ideas as motions which get debated. All students can submit motions and attend the meeting, but only course reps, faculty reps, network chairs, society presidents, volunteering project co-ordinators, or club captains can vote on motions.
How do motions come into existence?
A student will have a new idea on how to better their SU. They then meet with the Liberation & Campaigns Team, to help shape this into a motion. Sometimes students will be ahead of the curb and have a fully fledged motion ready to submit!

What happens with motions once approved?
Motions get sent to Democratic Standards, to be approved for debate. They’ll make sure it’s appropriate to go to AMM and approve it. The students will be notified and briefed on having to propose a motion by the SU staff team.
How the debate is structured
Students at our Student Council get to speak for a motion if they’ve introduced the idea, to propose and convince the student body it works! Then someone can speak against the motion if they don’t like it. There’s a chance to answer any questions you might have about the idea to the proposer – rinse & repeat until we need to hold a vote!
Why it is important to debate?
Imagine if the SU suddenly decided it was against their practice to ever support the football on, or to never host events past the month of March. It would feel pretty unfair, right? Debate is designed as a chance to hear from everyone – so we can carry on being a Union for all Students!
How do I vote?
As part of our efforts to make our democratic events more accessible and easier to take part in, we're trying something new this year... digital voting! The Anson Rooms is on the first floor of The Richmond building. Step free access into The Richmond Building is available via an accessible lift in the main entrance, with ground level access through the right side entrance on Queens Road, and in the back entrance on Richmond Terrace Avenue. Once inside the building there are two lifts which service all floors. There are doors around the building which have to be opened manually. Accessible toilets are available on every floor. Gender neutral toilets are available on the 4th floor.
We welcome attendees who need to bring medicines, food, or drink to manage a medical condition, or medical equipment. Please email us at bristolsu-democracy@bristol.ac.uk or speak to a member of staff on arrival if you have any questions or concerns.
If you need to step out of this event to find a quiet space please notify a member of staff as you’re leaving so that they can let you back in. Quiet areas with seating are available in the foyer and in the links spaces on the first and second floors of The Richmond Building.

Covid-19
- You should not attend any events if you have tested positive for COVID-19 or have COVID-19 symptoms. We recommend taking a Lateral Flow Test before attending any event.
- The venues we work with will have different COVID measures in place which must be adhered to.
- If an event has to be cancelled due to government restrictions around COVID-19, we will attempt to reschedule the event. Your ticket will remain valid for the rescheduled date. Refunds will only be issued if rescheduling is not possible.
General Terms and Conditions
- Bristol SU operates ticket purchasing for multiple events at venues across the city. These terms and conditions only apply where they are not superseded by an event promoter or a particular venue’s terms and conditions.
- Admission to all events is subject to the restrictions employed by the host venue.
- Students must bring their University of Bristol UCard to every event they wish to attend for identification purposes. For members of the public, photo ID will be required (e.g. passport, driving licence, proof of age card)
- Re-admission is not allowed once you have attended an event unless approved by the manager on duty.
- Right of admission is reserved by the venue management. Please note that you are still subject to Bristol SU’s event admission procedures and can be refused entry if you breach these.
- Your UCard is not transferrable – i.e. you cannot lend it to anyone else to get into the venue.
- Every effort will be made to allow priority queuing at all events – however, this cannot be guaranteed.
- All events are restricted to AGE 18+ unless specifically noted on the event page. All guests are required to provide proof of age if asked by the door staff, and you can be refused entry if you are unable to do this. Please note that any Bristol student who forgets their UCard will not be able to enter just by quoting their student number unless they can also produce proof of age.
- We may use your email address to contact you regarding any relevant changes to the event (e.g. rescheduling or cancellation).
Refunds - *** Please note that this is standard practice at every entertainments venue in the UK. *** ALL TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-TRANSFERRABLE. All sales are final. Refunds are not available on tickets once they have been purchased, including those purchased in error or non-attendance due to illness or injury. However, the following are certain instances in which a refund may be given. THERE ARE NO OTHER INSTANCES IN WHICH A REFUND MAY BE OFFERED.
- The entire event has been cancelled by the promoter or Bristol SU. In this instance, refunds are available to everyone who has purchased a ticket in advance.
- The main performing artiste has cancelled or the event altered for reasons beyond our control, but the event has still taken place. Again, refunds will only be considered in exceptional circumstances and where authorised.
- The event has sold out, and there are people waiting for extra tickets. In this instance refunds may be given, and the tickets then resold to people on the waiting list once the re-sale cash has been received.
- In all instances the duty manager’s decision will be final.
Transfer Policy

All tickets purchased for Bristol SU events are non-transferrable – they are assigned exclusively to your account and cannot be moved to that of another person.
Physical Ticket Replacements
- For events with physical tickets, it is the responsibility of the individual purchaser to keep their ticket safe once it has been collected from the information point or welcome desk. Please note that replacement tickets will not be issued in the event of their loss or damage, and will need to be repurchased in this instance. It is advised that you write your name and Uni number on the back of your ticket so that it can be returned if handed in!
Filming, Photography and Broadcast

During events, the SU may broadcast the event live, take photographs or record videos (as adapted or otherwise) to be used for marketing and editorial purposes of the SU in all media worldwide, without restriction and in any format. Photographs and videos taken on the day may appear in the following publications without limitation: The SU website, SU social media channels, and SU publications. If you have any concerns about appearing in photographs, film or live broadcasts, please let us know in advance by emailing bristolsu-marketing@bristol.ac.uk and we will do our best to comply with your wishes.

- We may use the email address you use to purchase tickets in order to give you updates about your purchase, the event or to seek feedback on the event itself after you've attended.
Act cancellations
- Bristol SU reserves the right to substitute performers in the event of an act cancelling.
