Bristol University Symphonia is a Gold accredited orchestral society, who won Performing Arts Society of the Year in 2020 and 2023!

We have two student-run orchestras: Symphony Orchestra, which is part-auditioned, and Philharmonic, which is the only un-auditioned full orchestra at the University. Besides playing great music, we have a jam packed social calendar and eat biscuits and cakes during rehearsal breaks! We offer a non-pressurised, fun environment for music making and are accessible to everyone! We have a vibrant and social orchestral family, and enjoy engaging with our local community, including through outreach events and sponsorships. This year we hope to continue our success and look forward to meeting and welcoming new musicians! You can apply to join both orchestras at bit.ly/applysymphonia

Our orchestras:

Symphonia Symphony Orchestra - Conducted by Caleb Kernaghan & Managed by Ella Kronqvist

Rehearsals Thursdays 7-9pm in the Carpenter Room, Bristol SU

Symphonia Symphony Orchestra is a part-auditioned group that plays a wide variety of advanced orchestral repertoire. In the past few years, this included Dvorak’s 8th Symphony, Mussorgsky’s Night on a Bald Mountain and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. The orchestra is a tight-knit family of musicians, and we encourage everyone to attend our regular fun socials, including post-rehearsal wind downs. We rehearse on Thursday evenings and perform at least three concerts per year. Our esteemed annual concerto and composition competitions offer special opportunities for individual musicians to showcase their talent.  If you would like to be a part of a student-led orchestra, make new friends, and play exciting music, this orchestra is for you.

2023 Winter Concert: 'New Beginnings'

Symphonia Philharmonic Orchestra - Conducted by Felicity Lewis & Managed by Peta Wall

Rehearsals Tuesdays 5-7pm in the Anson Rooms, Bristol SU

Symphonia Philharmonic Orchestra is  a relaxed full sized orchestra which is completely non auditioned.  We welcome everyone, no matter what their instrumental proficiency, to perform orchestral favourites from across the musical repertoire as part of a quality orchestra without the pressure of auditions and intensive practice schedules. Our programmes in the last few years have included Sibelius’ Finlandia, Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque, Danny Elfman’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings and perform at least three concerts a year. We often collaborate with other musical societies, such as in 2021 when we collaborated with the Bristol University Operatic society. This was an exciting opportunity for our players to try out some new, interesting repertoire and perform alongside a chorus. For a relaxed opportunity to play music and make friends, we'd love to see you at Symphonia's Philharmonic Orchestra!

Our 2023 Winter Concert: 'A Magical Journey'
