Everything You Need to Know About Our Reclaim March

Wednesday 09-11-2022 - 14:09

Bristol SU's Reclaim March is back! As part of the national Reclaim the Night movement, we are uniting as many women, non-binary people, other marginalised genders and supporters of the campaign to reclaim the city as our own, and to demand the use of public spaces at night without fear!

This year, we are working with the Equality Liberations and Access Officer, the Womens Network and iFemSoc on the event.

What Is Reclaim?

Reclaim is our annual campaign against sexual harassment and gender-based violence, as part of the national Reclaim The Night movement, which began in 1977. Each year we march through Bristol, calling for the safety of all women and marginalized genders in the city, and an end to sexual violence.

As well as the Reclaim March, we are running many other Reclaim events including a Reclaim the Dancefloor club night.

Why Are We Marching?

We are marching against sexual harassment and gender-based violence, and to reclaim the city as our own, and to demand the use of public spaces at night without fear!

What to Expect

On Thursday 24 November, we will be meeting at Queen Square from 6pm, before marching up Park Street to the Richmond Building at 6.30pm. There will be a speech by the central statue before the march begins with a ‘Reclaim the March’ banner at the front.

The march will take between 30-45 minutes, and your elected officers and official SU marshals will help lead the way and keep the route clear and safe.

If you need help at any point there will be marshals in high vis jackets that you can get support from!

Before the pandemic, this march had great student engagement year on year. We are hoping to bring that same level of energy back into this year's Reclaim events!

For more event details, see the event page: Reclaim the Night March.

Finding People to Go With

Our banner making is the perfect opportunity to make friends and find people to go with before the march. See the event: Reclaim the Night Banner Making! You can also bring your own banners and placards if you don't have a chance to attend our banner-making event.
